On this Forts around Utrecht tour we cycle through the ancient Dutch farmlands just outside the city. From the city center of Utrecht you can be in nature in no time. Are you fed up with the bustle of the city? Then cycle with Utrecht Travelcafe out of the city and into the forest within 15 minutes.
We cycle past a number of forts of the New Dutch Waterline. An important Dutch defense line that you will learn about during the tour. The guide will tell you many things about Utrecht at the beginning of the tour, but we’ll soon leave the city. Along the Kromme Rijn river we cycle towards the Rhijnauwen estate near Amelisweerd. At the beautiful Tea House Rhijnauwen we can be stop for a real Dutch pancake.
From there we cycle in a northerly direction. On the horizon you will see the Uithof appear. One of the largest university complexes in the Netherlands. We continue cycling through De Bilt and the historic Groenekan. On the way we see the forts Voordorp and Ruigenhoek. We pass water-rich nature reserves, villages, forests and farmlands with wide views. Eventually we end up at Fort aan de Klop, which now lies within the city limits of Utrecht. Here we have a short break for a well-deserved cold drink on the beautiful terrace of this fort.
In the last part of the tour we cycle along the Vecht, an important water connection between Utrecht and Amsterdam. In the past, many wealthy people from both cities had their country houses built here. We enter the city along the Vecht. Before we return the bikes we see a really nice example of a city mill.
